Rachael Zemek 35th Lorne Cancer Conference 2023

Rachael Zemek

Dr Rachael Zemek is a Forrest Prospect fellow and Raine Brightspark fellow within the Sarcoma Research Team at the Telethon Kids Institute, Perth. She graduated from her PhD from UWA in 2019 where her research focused on improving the response to immune checkpoint blockade therapy for cancer. By developing novel mouse models combined with computational analyses of gene expression data, she was able to compare responders and non-responders to immune checkpoint blockade to identify the underlying pathways. From this work, she identified drugs to increase the response rate, from which she is a co-inventor on two patents. Rachael has published her research in high ranking journals, from which she has received multiple awards including 2020’s Cancer Council WA Early Career Researcher of the Year and has been an invited speaker at international conferences. Rachael is now extending her research to target childhood cancers such as sarcoma which are resistant to immune therapies.
