Andrew A Guirguis

Andrew Guirguis is a physician-scientist with an active interest in myelodysplastic syndromes and acute myeloid leukaemia. He completed his haematology training at the Alfred Hospital and subsequently embarked on a PhD with A/Prof Andrew Wei and David Curtis - completing a body of work that examined the role of apoptosis on transformation in myelodysplastic syndrome. He subsequently traveled to Boston to undertake a postdoctoral fellowship under the mentorship of Professor Benjamin Ebert - here he worked on studying the role of initiating mutations on the ongoing maintenance of acute myeloid leukaemia. He also developed an interest in RNA biology and splicing. In late 2019 - Andrew joined the Peter MacCallum Cancer Institute as a postdoctoral fellow under the mentorship of Professor Mark Dawson in the Cancer Epigenetics group. Here he continues his work in acute myeloid leukaemia studying the role of the bone marrow microenvironment in disease pathogenesis. During this time he also hopes to extend his knowledge in RNA biology and epigenetics.
