Mark Cowley 35th Lorne Cancer Conference 2023

Mark Cowley

Group Leader at Children’s Cancer Institute, Associate Professor at UNSW Medicine, co-leader of the Luminesce Alliance Data Enabling Platform, co-leader of the ACRF Childhood Cancer Liquid Biopsy Program, and the Genome Informatics leader of the Zero Childhood Cancer Program. Mark completed a BSc in Bioinformatics at the University of Sydney in 2003, and a PhD at UNSW in 2009. During 11 years at Garvan Institute (2008-18) ultimately as the Program Leader of Translational Genome Informatics and Cancer Genomics, Mark developed his expertise in bioinformatics, genomics and precision medicine. These methods were applied predominantly to rare genetic diseases, pancreas cancer and rare cancers, enabling two national precision medicine cancer initiatives (ZERO and MoST) and clinically accredited whole genome analysis applied to thousands of Australian patients. Since 2018, Mark’s research program develops methods that help understand whole genome and transcriptome data in real-time for children with cancer, bringing much-needed answers for patients with this disease.
