Yash Chhabra
Dr Yash Chhabra is a Research Associate at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Baltimore, USA. He obtained his PhD with Dean’s Commendation at the Institute for Molecular Biosciences, University of Queensland, Australia under Prof. Michael Waters where he studied structure and function attributes of the Growth hormone receptor. During his postdoctoral research with Dr. Andrew Brooks he elucidated the mechanisms by which growth hormone signaling promoted diabetes, a phenomenon that was elusive for 50 years and more recently discovered the molecular basis of competition between JAK vs. Src kinases in cytokine receptor binding. Subsequently, he changed fields from endocrinology into melanoma and worked under Prof. Richard Sturm and Dr. Aaron Smith at the Translational Research Institute in Brisbane where he led projects in melanocytic biology and phenotype switching in melanoma. In his current role in Prof. Ashani Weeraratna’s laboratory, since 2020, his research focus has been to elucidate how the tumor microenvironment responds to intrinsic and extrinsic cues and governs melanoma progression and reactivation from dormancy. His research aimed at deciphering the mechanistic pathways underlying sex and age disparity in melanoma is also the focus of his independent research program with the aim of understanding vulnerabilities and targets for intervention towards tailored therapeutic strategies.
